UAE residence overview

Compare UAE residence options by qualifying basis—not by headline.

The appropriate route depends on why you are moving, the evidence you can provide, your sponsor or qualifying category and the competent authority. This overview helps international applicants prepare for an official eligibility review.

General information and initial coordination only. Authority decisions remain independent.

Decision framework

Use five questions for every route

What is the basis?

Employment, family, study, business, property or another qualifying category.

Who is involved?

Applicant, sponsor, employer, institution, company or qualifying authority.

Which authority?

Confirm the competent authority and current service card.

What evidence?

Use the current route-specific list, not a generic online checklist.

What conditions?

Understand validity, renewal, dependant and status requirements.

Route contexts

Different goals can lead to different services

Employment-based residence commonly involves an employer and the applicable labour and residence processes. Family residence depends on the sponsor and relationship evidence. Student residence involves the relevant education institution and authority route. Business, investment and property contexts can involve separate qualifying criteria and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Long-term residence categories, including Golden Residency and Green Residency, have their own eligibility conditions. A person should not assume that owning an asset, holding a professional title or operating a company automatically establishes eligibility.

Long-term options

Use current ICP eligibility guidance

ICP describes Golden Residency as a long-term category for eligible groups and Green Residency as a renewable long-term category for eligible applicants without a sponsor inside the country. Categories and required evidence differ. Check the current official guide and service before relying on a duration, threshold or document list.

Eligibility is individual.

Dubai Gateways can help organise the initial facts, but only the authority or an appropriately authorised professional can confirm the current route and evidence.

Practical planning

Sequence each family member’s process

Create a table for the main applicant and every dependant: proposed route, sponsor, current location, passport validity, required civil documents, school timing, healthcare needs and target travel window. Ask the authorised specialist which steps must happen first and which may run in parallel.

Common mistakes

Do not build the move around an unverified assumption

  • Do not book irreversible arrangements before the route is verified.
  • Do not assume one family member’s eligibility covers everyone.
  • Do not rely on an expired screenshot or third-party summary.
  • Do not send sensitive documents through a general enquiry form.
  • Do not treat an application receipt as an approval.
